Washington, D.C. (Sept. 11, 2015)—September is National Preparedness Month, and the Independent Community Bankers of America® (ICBA) are offering tips to help consumers get their financial documents in order before a natural disaster strikes.

“While the first priority is the safety of you and your family, knowing that your banking documents and private financial information are safe gives you one less thing to worry about during stressful times,” said ICBA Chairman Jack Hartings, president and CEO of The Peoples Bank Co. in Coldwater, Ohio. “Natural disasters of any kind quickly remind us how important it is to be organized and have a plan ahead of time. Having a financial preparedness plan will protect you and your family from the long-term effects of damaged, destroyed or lost financial documents.”

PrimeSouth Bank would like to share with you provided by ICBA the following tips to help consumers prepare their financial information before a natural disaster occurs.

  • Keep marriage licenses, birth certificates, adoption papers, property deeds, wills, insurance policies, passports, Social Security cards, car titles or lease contracts, bank and investment account numbers and three years of tax returns in a bank safe-deposit box. Put each of these documents in a sealed plastic bag to keep out moisture.
  • Make and safeguard additional official copies of critical documents such as birth certificates, adoption papers, marriage licenses and the deed to your home for safekeeping and notify a trustee, close relative or attorney where your important financial information is located.
  • Keep names and contact numbers for executors, trustees and guardians in a safe place, either in your safe deposit box or with a close relative.
  • Take an inventory and keep a list of household valuables. Taking photographs of these items can help as well. 
  • Include extra cash, preferably small bills, in your home emergency kit, which should include a three-day supply of water and food, a first aid kit, a manual can opener, flashlights, a radio and extra batteries.
  • Secure online data storage, which can serve as a supplement or backup to paper copies. Scanned or other electronic documents can be uploaded with secure online backup services.
  • If you feel flood insurance may be necessary to protect your home, start shopping around.  Contact your insurance agent or visit the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s website for more information.

Noah Griggs Honored for 50 Years of Service

Noah Griggs was recently honored by the Alabama Bankers Association for 50 years of service in the banking industry.  Mr. Griggs is a long-time resident of the Tallassee area and most recently served on the board of directors for PrimeSouth Bank.

Mr. Griggs began his career in 1964 at the First Bank of Notasulga, followed by Alabama Exchange Bank and First Federal Savings and Loan before ending up at PrimeSouth Bank.  He served in many different roles such as cashier, loan officer and director during his banking career and served for many years as Chairman of the Board for PrimeSouth.

“It’s hard to put into words the impact that Mr. Noah has had in our community and specifically with our bank throughout the years,” said Dave Baggett, CEO of PrimeSouth.  “His desire to help and serve people in our area and his uncompromising character is unrivaled.”

 - On Friday afternoons, the drive thru lanes at all branches are open until 5:30 p.m.

 - On Saturday mornings, the drive thru lanes at both Tallassee locations are open from 9 a.m. to noon.

 - ATM's are available at all branches and both ATM's in Tallassee now accept deposits.

ICBA and PrimeSouth Bank Provides Tips for
Preventing Elder Financial Abuse

June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
Washington, D.C. (June 09, 2015)– June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, and the Independent Community Bankers of America® (ICBA), the Senior Housing Crime Prevention Foundation (SHCPF) and PrimeSouth Bank are providing tips for preventing the disturbing trend of elder financial abuse.
“Community bankers serve a vital role in protecting members of our communities, including the elderly who are all too often targets of financial abuse,” said ICBA Chairman Jack Hartings, president and CEO of The Peoples Bank Co., in Coldwater, Ohio. “It’s important for all Americans to be aware of this very real issue and learn about ways to help prevent elder financial abuse from happening. If you have questions or concerns about the safety and security of your finances, you should speak to your local community banker immediately.”
ICBA, SHCPF and PrimeSouth Bank offer the following suggestions on ways to prevent elder financial abuse:
• Secure all of your valuables in a bank safe deposit box. These valuables can include your Social Security card, passports, credit card account numbers, will and other legal documents, financial statements and medical records.
• Do not give financial information to callers who contact you and claim to be from established organizations such as your bank or credit card companies, especially if they ask you to wire funds or send them private information. If you are concerned about your bank account, contact your local community bank directly.
• Check your bank accounts and bill statements carefully. If you notice unauthorized charges, alert your bank immediately.
• Do not give your personal information, such as bank account numbers or PINs, to anyone in a phone call, letter, email, fax or text message.
• Have enough money set aside to support yourself and your immediate family for at least six months in case of an emergency. Your local community banker can help create a financial roadmap for you and your family.
“Elder financial abuse and scamming techniques are at epidemic proportions across our country. SHCPF is dedicated to providing educational resources to help our nation’s seniors and their family members on ways to protect themselves against financial exploitation,” said Edward J. Gentry, chairman, president and CEO of the Senior Housing Crime Prevention Foundation. “We are encouraging every community banker to spread the word on ways to prevent elder financial abuse and exploitation to every senior citizen and their adult family members.”

Debit Card Fraud Update

As you all know, our Tallassee community has been hit with a large amount of debit/credit card fraud over the past several days. We have spoken with many of our customers already but wanted to provide a general update. 

First of all, our customers have been wonderful this week – thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through this. Although the criminal activity is not isolated to PrimeSouth, we are absorbing the losses that our customers incurred due to positively identified fraudulent charges.

Due to the volume of fraudulent activity, we were forced to block certain transaction types and geographic locations for all cards while we worked to isolate the cards that were most likely affected.  We are working to unblock safe cards and also have decided to proactively re-issue cards to all customers who we determined were potentially at risk, most of those being Tallassee customers.  If your card will be re-issued you can still use PIN and ATM transactions until the new card arrives.

If your card is being re-issued, you should receive a letter in the next couple days. However, if you would like to check the status of your card, please send a secure email to or call one of our local offices.
